Education System in Indonesia is Not Ready for Full-day School Program

Education System in Indonesia is Not Ready for Full-day School Program.

Veronica Kumala Dewi

Education system in Indonesia needs more improvement

Full-day school program is a new education system that has a purpose for students to have full-time to study in school. The program is designed to keep elementary and junior high school students in state and private schools in class from 07.00 a.m up until 05.00 p.m. Minister Effendy claimed that this policy will prevent children from doing unproductive or otherwise dangerous activities while their parents are working. Full-day school started from 1980’s in America, for kindergarten students and increase to junior high school students. The background of full-day school is many parents that feel worried about leaving their children because they worked outside the home. Parents hope that the academic value of the children will increase. By sending their children to full-day school, parents hope their children will spend more time to learning in school. Some parents agree that full-day school program is applied, but some parents disagree with this program. But in this case, Indonesia is not ready for the full-day school program. Full-day school program should not be applied in Indonesia.

Facilities and infrastructure in Indonesia's schools are inadequate. There are still a lot of aspects that infrastructure is not maximized. There are still many schools were damaged building unfit for use as a place for learning. The concept of full-day school is in developed countries already has the facilities and infrastructure complete education in school. Many schools in Indonesia should pay attention to the aspects. Not just think about the full-time in school, but about the physical of the building, the building in some schools in Indonesia should be in renovation. If the government wants the students to have full-time in school, they should think about amenities in school. Students were not comfortable to study because the building is not in good condition, they need amenities. Students will feel bored and can't concentrate on learning because the building is not comfortable as a place for learning activities.

Students don't have a quality time with their family. If students have full-time in school, they don't have time to play at home with their family and their friends. From morning, the parents will go out to work, and their children must go to school for learning. If the children have full-time in school, they can't have a time with their parents. Because the parents and the children were busy to do their own activities. It's not fair if the students just spend their time only in the school from morning until afternoon. Some students must help their parents to work. They help their parents who usually work in rice fields or gardens. In the village, some parents of students have rice fields or gardens, they work as a farmer. If the program is applied, the students can't help their parents work. Some students' family has their routine activities or quality time. The routine activities or their quality time will rarely happen if the full-day school program is applied.

The students can't socialize with other people. Because of the full-day school program, the students can't have friends except in their school. The students just have full-time in school; they don’t have time in another place. They can't communicate with other people, like with their neighbors or friends in the church. They miss their time to socialize because they were busy to study in school. When the students were a child, they must have a good interaction with other people and build the relationship with other people. Then they can socialize well.

Conclusion

In Indonesia, full-day school program is not ready to apply. There are a lot of problems in Indonesia's schools. In this time, Indonesia's educational ranking in the world is still low. Additional school hours mean more educational outcomes. But in Indonesia's schools, there are still a lot of infrastructures inadequate. If the full-day school program will be applied in Indonesia, the schools should improve the infrastructure and the facilities. The government should pay attention to the condition of schools in Indonesia.
